Chelsea star Cole Palmer has admitted he can’t properly remember the moment he scored for England against Spain in the final of Euro 2024 as it was one of those big moments that happened so fast.

Palmer has been a world class performer since joining Chelsea from Manchester City last season, but he was surprisingly used quite sparingly by Gareth Southgate at the Euros this summer.

Still, the 22-year-old did come off the bench in England’s big game in the final against Spain, and scored a superbly-taken equaliser within minutes of being introduced.

Chelsea summer signing could leave ALREADY and Man Utd are preparing their move!

It was a huge moment that will have been celebrated like mad up and down the country, but Palmer himself admits he doesn’t remember it too well.

Speaking in an interview with GQ, Palmer had this to say when asked about that goal: “Obviously, I’ve watched it all back, the highlights and that… but it’s one of those things that happened so fast you don’t really remember it.”

Cole Palmer’s England snub one of Gareth Southgate’s biggest errors

Even if Southgate did a mostly really impressive job during his time in charge of England, he undoubtedly got it badly wrong with Palmer this summer.

In the end, Southgate’s Three Lions side were beaten 2-1 by Spain in that final, with Palmer’s introduction proving too little, too late.

And yet struggling performers like Harry Kane and Phil Foden stayed in the team throughout the tournament, which raises serious questions about Southgate’s judgement.

Ultimately, it was probably the right time for England to make a change, with Thomas Tuchel now set to start in the job in 2025.

Lee Carsley remains in charge as interim manager until then, and Palmer will hope to continue to impress with Chelsea so as to give himself the best chance of playing regularly for England in the future.

Chelsea have unveiled their Christmas charity project, with Cole Palmer featuring heavily in the star-studded video of players and fans past and present.

The Blues have often been on the wrong end of media headlines with the club even being accused of blackmailing one of their stars into signing a new deal.

Chelsea release brilliant Christmas charity video featuring Cole Palmer

Trouble at Stamford Bridge never appears to be far away, so the charity initiative that the West Londoners are getting involved in will arguably bring them some much-needed positive PR.

The video released by the club features stars from past and present, including Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Christopher Nkunku, whilst Madness front man, and famous Chelsea fan, Suggs, also makes an appearance.

Cole Palmer makes an embarrassing admission regarding Chelsea legend. Find out what was said here!

Cole Palmer has star billing, with the tagline ‘Leave the cold to Cole’ being the message that Chelsea have pushed forward.

A message on X read; The Club and the CFC Foundation are united in our mission to support the coldest this winter. Over 3000 people were sleeping rough in south-west London alone last year. We are working alongside Chelsea supporters and local charities to provide warm clothing to those who need it most. Throughout our Christmas campaign we’ll be raising funds to support charities like Barons Court Project, tackling homelessness and its root causes in London. Let’s do something together.

It’s certainly a message that will resonate with many, particularly as the cold winter months take hold.

That the initiative looks to those in need who are most local to the club makes it a more noble cause, and if enough funds are raised to take even one person off the streets this winter, it will have surely served its purpose.

Arsenal may have been handed a welcome boost with the news that Chelsea’s star player Cole Palmer is currently not fit ahead of their game in the Premier League this weekend.

Palmer has been a world class performer for the Blues in recent times and it would be a massive blow for Enzo Maresca to be without the England international for Sunday’s big game at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca is quoted as saying that Palmer hasn’t been training, admitting he could only hope to have the former Manchester City playmaker back for the visit of Arsenal this weekend.

See below for Maresca’s quotes, as posted by Fabrizio Romano on X…

“Cole Palmer was not able to train yesterday, he was not fit,” the Italian tactician said.

“We hope to have him back against Arsenal, we will assess him.”

Chelsea were also without Palmer for their trip to the Emirates Stadium towards the end of last season, when they were thrashed 5-0 by the Gunners.

They won’t want to go into such a big game without their star player again, even if they obviously have pretty decent squad depth and cover in the attacking areas.

Arsenal have injury worries of their own…

It’s not all positive news for Arsenal at the moment, though, as Declan Rice has not travelled with Mikel Arteta’s squad for tonight’s Champions League game away to Inter Milan.

Arsenal to BID €40m for one of Liverpool’s top targets! Click here for the full story!

“Declan unfortunately picked an injury against Newcastle,” Arteta confirmed, as quoted by the Metro.

“He was able to finish and he wasn’t feeling good the last few days. We’ll have to assess him on Thursday and see if he’s ready for Chelsea.”

Still, if there’s no Palmer to deal with in that attacking midfield area, that could just about balance things out, as Arsenal would undoubtedly want Rice there to do a job on the 22-year-old.

Enzo Maresca has shown himself not to be backward in coming forward to criticise his Chelsea players if they’re not performing as he likes, with ex-Man United and England legend Paul Scholes agreeing with the Blues manager.

Scholes has started to carve out a career for himself as a pundit, and like Maresca, he doesn’t mince his words when he wants to make a point.

Perhaps the ‘tough love’ approach at Stamford Bridge is the way to go after the failed regimes of Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, Frank Lampard (caretaker) and Mauricio Pochettino.

Enzo Maresca finds support from Paul Scholes on key issue

Digging out your captain in public arguably isn’t the best course of action, however.

The Italian will argue that his hard line approach is working, the midweek Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle notwithstanding.

After nine games of the current Premier League season, the West Londoners find themselves in fifth place and just six points off Man City at the summit.

For the most part, Chelsea have been playing some attractive football, though the defeat at St. James’ Park will have knocked confidence.

This weekend sees them head to Old Trafford to take on a Man United side in transition, but one under Ruud van Nistelrooy who hit five against Leicester in their own Carabao Cup tie.

The Dutchman’s former Red Devils team-mate certainly didn’t hold back on The Overlap when discussing Chelsea, and in particular, the captaincy of the club.

“The captain’s role is quite important,” he said.

“We had some unbelievable captains at Manchester United. Bryan Robson is someone you look up to with the stature, the presence, he looks after his players. Roy Keane – these types of players. I think it’s important.

“You look at Arsenal, you look at the great captains – Tony Adams, Chelsea – John Terry, Liverpool – Steven Gerrard. All the big characters in the team, it’s important for these young players to look up to that. I think it’s big.

“I remember when Reece James got appointed, I thought, he doesn’t look like a captain to me.

“He seems very quiet and shy. You can be captain like that but he’s just not the character that you’d expect for a club the size as Chelsea football club.

“Off the pitch, they are big characters as well that people look up to. I don’t see Cole Palmer as a captain.”

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has explained why he didn’t bring on Cole Palmer during Wednesday night’s defeat to Newcastle United.

The Blues went down 2-0 at St. James’ Park, exiting the EFL Cup and the fourth round stage.

Supporters were understandably disappointed in a wasteful Chelsea performance where they outshot Newcastle 17-8 and generated 1.97 xG but failed to score.

Maresca rotated his starting line-up, giving opportunities to the likes of Christopher Nkunku, Joao Felix and Mykhaylo Mudryk.

But despite their struggles in the final third, Noni Madueke was the only substitute Maresca used.

That meant Palmer remained an unused substitute alongside the likes of Marc Guiu and experienced defenders Ben Chilwell and Levi Colwill.

Many have been left wondering why Maresca didn’t introduce Palmer, who has seven goals and five assists to his name in nine Premier League appearances this season —including scoring in Sunday’s 2-1 win over the Magpies at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca has responded, insisting the players he already had out on the field were doing enough.

“No, no, no. Simply because I think Joao [Felix] and Christo [Nkunku] were doing very good,” Maresca told reporters in his post-match press conference (via Football.London).

“The reason why [we brought him] was in case we needed Cole but Joao and Christo were doing well so there was no need to change.”

Now out of the EFL Cup, Chelsea’s attention returns to the Premier League when they travel to Manchester United on Sunday before hosting FC Noah in the Uefa Conference League on Thursday.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have drawn Brentford at home in the EFL Cup quarter-finals as they seek to reach the final for a second time in three years.

The team of the week from the latest round of Premier League action is in, with players from Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and more featuring in Troy Deeney’s line up.

Still, it’s perhaps a bit of a surprise to see that Deeney didn’t select a single Liverpool player in his team of the week, given that the Reds fought back well to earn a 2-2 draw away to Arsenal.

See below for the full XI on BBC Sport, with Arsenal’s Thomas Partey doing well to earn a place after filling in well in an unfamiliar role at right-back, while there’s also no way Chelsea’s Cole Palmer could have been left out after his starring role for the Blues as they beat Newcastle United…

Premier League team of the week
Premier League team of the week (via BBC Sport)

Elsewhere, it’s a real mix from across the Premier League as we also see impressive performers from the likes of Crystal Palace, West Ham, Fulham, Nottingham Forest, and Wolves.

Brentford’s Bryan Mbuemo is also a name that’s becoming harder and harder to ignore as his superb season continues, so this probably won’t be the last team of the week we see him in.

Team of the week: Liverpool harshly overlooked?

Liverpool might not have been at their brilliant best against Arsenal, but Mohamed Salah came up with a crucial equaliser in the second half and was a threat throughout, while Trent Alexander-Arnold had a role in the goal and helped the Reds control the game a bit better when he inverted into midfield slightly more in the second half.

Liverpool fans won’t care too much, though, as they’ll simply be happy with a well-earned point from one of their toughest fixtures so far, with Arne Slot still only having one defeat to his name after a terrific start since replacing Jurgen Klopp at Anfield in the summer.

Cole Palmer has admitted he doesn’t know much beyond Gianfranco Zola beyond him being an ‘icon’ on Fifa after being compared to the Chelsea legend.

Palmer continued his stunning start to the season with another goal as Chelsea beat Newcastle United 2-1 on Sunday.

The 22-year-old also pulled off a remarkable pass in the build-up to Nicolas Jackson’s opening goal.

Palmer now sits on seven goals and five assists in nine Premier League appearances at the start of this season.

Looking further back, the England international has 32 goals and 20 assists to his name in 56 appearances for Chelsea across all competitions after joining from Manchester City in the summer of 2023.

Palmer’s style and effortless class have drawn comparisons to Chelsea legend Zola, who became a firm fan favourite during his seven-year, 312-game spell at Stamford Bridge between 1996 and 2003.

Even Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has been among those making the comparison.

“They’re quite similar in terms of quality and seeing things the rest don’t see,” the Italian coach said (via Yahoo).

Palmer was unsurprisingly asked about the comparisons following Sunday’s win. However, the forward gave a surprising response, saying he didn’t know much about Zola beyond the Fifa (now EA Sports FC) video game series.

“I know he is an icon on Fifa so he must have been good. To be honest, I didn’t really watch him play,” Palmer admitted, adding: “Everyone says he was a great player, so thank you.”

Palmer was also asked about his current ‘unstoppable’ form but as always, he remained modest in the face of lavish praise.

“I wouldn’t go that far. I always try to enjoy my football game by game,” he said (via BBC Sport).

“I try to not put pressure on myself. Many people on the outside try to put pressure on me to replicate what I did last season in terms of numbers. It is my second season playing football and I am still very, very young.”

Jamie Carragher has lavished praise upon Chelsea’s Cole Palmer for his pass in the build-up to Nicolas Jackson’s goal against Newcastle on Sunday.

Palmer was denied a goal in the fourth minute when VAR judged him to be narrowly offside when being played behind by Jackson.

But just 14 minutes later, it was Palmer helping to get Jackson on the scoresheet, unleashing a stunning pass to break open the Newcastle defence and get Pedro Neto running behind.

The Portuguese winger found the back-post run of Jackson, who slotted home first time to give Chelsea the lead, which they completely deserved following an impressive opening of immense pressure on the Newcastle backline.

Palmer’s pass immediately got social media talking, while Sky Sports ran a poll asking if it was the ‘pass of the season so far’.

However, Carragher went one step further, suggesting it was one of the best passes he’s ever seen in the Premier League.

“That is one of the best passes I’ve seen, never mind this season, but in the Premier League,” the former Liverpool defender told Sky Sports. “It takes two or three Newcastle players out and then Neto sets it up on a plate for Jackson.”

Palmer’s day got even better just two minutes into the second half when he fired past Nick Pope to restore Chelsea’s lead following Alexander Isak’s equaliser.

That takes Palmer to 29 Premier League goals since joining Chelsea, drawing level with Spanish winger Pedro in 95 games less.

It already looks like Palmer is primed for another assault on the Premier League Golden Boot and Playmaker races, with the England international on seven goals and five assists after just nine appearances.

It takes a lot to draw praise from Roy Keane but that’s exactly what Cole Palmer managed to do in the first half of Chelsea’s clash with Newcastle on Sunday.

Palmer was in rampant form once again, only denied the opening goal in the fourth minute thanks to a narrow offside call by VAR, while 14 minutes later, he played a sublime pass in the build-up to Nicolas Jackson’s strike.

It’s the sort of performance we’ve now come to expect from Palmer, who has been a revelation since joining Chelsea from Manchester City in the summer of 2023. And it was enough to draw just a little praise from Keane, which is worth its weight in gold considering the source.

“Zola mentioned it before the game. Even before he gets it, Palmer knows what is going on around him,” the former Manchester United captain told Sky Sports. “I love watching this kid.”

Cole Palmer gets his goal

Although he was denied in the first half, it felt almost inevitable that Palmer would eventually get his goal.

In fact, it took just two minutes of the second half for the England star to strike, firing home at the near post to finish a quick Chelsea counter after they won the ball back in midfield.

Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope may be a little disappointed not to keep the shot out but, then again, the speed and dip on Palmer’s shot were enough to fool any goalkeeper.

Chelsea fans will be relieved at the timing of the goal after Alexander Isak had drawn Newcastle level in the 32nd minute.

That’s Palmer’s 29th Premier League goal for the Blues which, as noted by Squawka, draws him level with Spanish winger Pedro.

However, Pedro needed 137 games to reach that total, while Palmer has taken just 42 matches to do so.

Chelsea star Cole Palmer produced a moment of magic in the build-up to the Blues’ opening goal against Newcastle United this afternoon.

The England international has been a revelation since his move to Chelsea from Manchester City last year, and he just seems to get better and better with each passing game.

Watch below as Palmer absolutely cuts open the Newcastle defence with a superb long ball out to Pedro Neto, who goes on to set up Nicolas Jackson for an easy tap-in…

Palmer truly is a joy to watch when he plays like this, and many football journalists on X/Twitter are absolutely loving this pass, with the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope among those to pay tribute to the youngster, saying this is probably the pass of the season…

Fabrizio Romano was also clearly impressed, as was Bobby Vincent of football.london…

Palmer also had an earlier goal disallowed, so it’s been a lively start to this game for him and it probably won’t be the last we see of him this afternoon.

Cole Palmer – future Ballon d’Or winner?

Palmer just seems to have a bit of everything to his game, so if he can carry on producing goals, assists and key passes like this, and it starts to lead Chelsea to success, we’re surely going to be talking very seriously about a Ballon d’Or contender quite soon.

Palmer was asked about it recently, and admitted he’d love to be in contention one day, having been flattered to already earn a nomination.

“It was a surprise to be recognised at that level so early in my career,” Palmer is quoted by TNT Sports.

“It’s a huge honour. Winning it would be brilliant, and I believe with hard work and consistency I could get there.”
