Man United have been in the doldrums for a few years now, but the hire of Ruben Amorim offers them hope of a brighter future, and Stan Collymore believes it’s something that will be “very simple” for the Portuguese to achieve.

Captain, Bruno Fernandes, has already backed his new manager to come in and do the business at the club, whilst Amorim’s tactics are expected to benefit one player in particular.

Stan Collymore says Ruben Amorim must be clear in his communication

The dark days under Erik ten Hag have gone and it’s like the fog has lifted over Old Trafford. All before Amorim has even taken charge of a single game for the Red Devils.

If the 39-year-old can get United playing in the same way as his Sporting team, whom he left whilst they were top of the Portuguese league table having won all of their matches so far this season, then there’ll be no complaints from the long-suffering support either.

“In terms of Amorim coming in, I think that every good manager that I’ve played under, and every good manager that I’ve seen on day one says everybody’s got a clean slate,” Stan Collymore said to CaughtOffside for his exclusive column.

Ruben Amorim has a simple way of succeeding

“[…] Man United need all of their players to buy into what Amorim wants to do, and that will be fresh, lively and intense training sessions, which will be taken through into games. It will be hanging on his every word. It might be picking out three or four trusted senior players in the dressing room to cover all his bases but everybody has to play their part.

“It’s very simple. If a player’s level isn’t right, they have to understand that they’re going to be on the bench or not even in a match day squad under Amorim.

“I think that kind of clear communication has obviously been lacking across the board at Manchester United but now is the perfect time for that to change.”

By the end of the season, United’s fans and board will have a much better idea as to whether hiring Amorim was the best decision or not.

For all of his brilliance in Portugal, he’s never managed outside of his home country, and only had one short playing stint in Qatar on his CV.

The Premier League is an entirely different ball game, however, as he showed when his Sporting team dismantled Man City in the Champions League, there is something special about him.

Bruno Fernandes believes Ruben Amorim has the potential to turn Manchester United back into title winners.

Amorim is the sixth permanent Man Utd manager since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, taking over following the sacking of Erik ten Hag and Ruud van Nistelrooy’s interim spell.

Despite some cup success, the Red Devils have failed to add to their 20 English league titles since Ferguson left, watching on as the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool and even Leicester City have tasted glory.

In fact, United have finished in the top two in just two of the last 11 seasons.

While a title charge won’t be expected straight away under Amorim, his long-term remit will be to return United to the pinnacle of English football.

The 39-year-old arrives with a good pedigree after guiding Sporting CP to two Portuguese titles in four years following a drought dating back to 2002. The Lions are also well-placed to add a 21st title to their collection, sitting top of the Liga Portugal table, six points clear of Porto and perfect after 11 games.

Former Sporting playmaker Fernandes is hopeful his compatriot can replicate that sort of success at Old Trafford.

“I hope he does the same here because you know sometimes a person can change the energy of a space, if it’s the right moment,” Fernandes said (via Man Utd’s official website).

“We hope that he can come, and this is the right moment for him to come and bring his energy, bring his qualities and his knowledge of football, because he’s done something really, really special at Sporting.

“If someone doubts that, it’s about just looking at the past.

“Sporting was to be about 20 years without winning the league, and he got back to win the league, and he won it two times in four years with a really youthful team, in a moment of change.

“So hopefully he can do the same here for us and [hopefully] it’s going to be a successful time for all of us.”

The latest Premier League team of the week is in, with some big names in there from Manchester United, Liverpool and Newcastle United.

Mohamed Salah is somewhat surprisingly the only Reds player to make Troy Deeney’s line up on BBC Sport, despite Arne Slot’s side beating a strong opponent in Aston Villa to go five points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

Liverpool have been absolutely superb since Slot took over from Jurgen Klopp in the summer, and Salah has undoubtedly been one of their stand-out performers, though others also surely did enough to earn a spot in this latest team of the week.

Premier League team of the week in full

See the image above for the team of the week in full, with Man Utd and Newcastle both getting three players each into the side.

United trio Andre Onana, Bruno Fernandes and Noussair Mazraoui were selected by Deeney, while Dan Burn, Alexander Isak and Joelinton of Newcastle all made it in.

Fernandes was certainly impressive in United’s win over Leicester City, while Isak is always a joy to watch for Newcastle, but the absence of more Liverpool players over some of these names does seem a bit harsh as they were also arguably playing stronger opponents.

Brighton also harshly overlooked in team of the week

Brighton also only had one player in despite beating Manchester City 2-1 in a superb performance.

The Seagulls fully deserved their comeback victory against the reigning Premier League champions, and yet some of their players have clearly gone a little under the radar.

Brighton’s win takes them to 6th in the Premier League table, and they’d actually be third, behind only Liverpool and Man City, if not for having an inferior goal difference to Arsenal, Chelsea and Nottingham Forest.

Man United took a 2-0 lead into the halftime break of their Premier League clash with Leicester City, which came courtesy of some Bruno Fernandes magic.

The Manchester club celebrated the 250th appearance of their captain on Sunday afternoon ahead of their match with the Foxes at Old Trafford as the Portuguese star has been a brilliant servant to the Red Devils since arriving from Sporting CP in 2020.

The 30-year-old celebrated the occasion by opening the scoring against Leicester as the midfielder bagged a beauty from just outside of the away side’s box with 17 minutes on the clock.

The Man United captain would also play a role in Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side doubling their advantage before the break as Leicester’s Victor Kristiansen knocked the ball into his own net, making it a very tough task for the Foxes in the second 45 minutes.

Fernandes is one man who has thrived under Van Nistelrooy’s leadership at Old Trafford and it is evident in the midfielder’s stats.

Fernandes was one of many Man United stars criticised for their performances throughout the opening phase of the 2024/25 campaign as the Red Devils squad struggled for form under Erik ten Hag. However, since the Dutch coach’s sacking, the Portuguese international has been on fire.

According to Squawka, the 30-year-old had not scored in his opening 13 matches under Ten Hag; since Van Nistelrooy took interim charge of the Manchester outfit, the 30-year-old has scored four goals across his last four matches.

The Dutch coach seems to have brought the best out of his captain and that has been to the benefit of United as the Red Devils have not lost a game in the lead-up to Ruben Amorim taking over at Old Trafford.

Man United celebrated the 250th appearance of their captain Bruno Fernandes on Sunday afternoon ahead of their clash with Leicester City at Old Trafford.

Results have improved of late for the Manchester club following the sacking of Erik ten Hag, but with Ruben Amorim set to take over the Red Devils tomorrow, Sunday’s match could be the last time the Old Trafford faithful get to see Ruud van Nistelrooy on the sideline.

In addition to this, the Leicester game marks the 250th time Bruno Fernandes plays for Man United and ahead of kickoff, the Premier League giants celebrated the feat by awarding the Portuguese star a commemorative shirt with pictures of his best United memories within the frame.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe was in attendance to present Manchester club’s gift to the midfielder, who has been a sensational player for the Red Devils since his arrival from Sporting CP in 2020.

The 30-year-old is set to add to his Man United tally for many more years as the United captain penned a new deal at Old Trafford in August, which keeps him with the Premier League giants until 2027.

Bruno Fernandes is key to the future of Man United

Since his arrival in 2020, Fernandes has been by far the best signing Man United have made since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Across the 249 appearances the Portuguese star has made at Old Trafford, the midfield talent has contributed with 82 goals and 72 assists. In addition to this, the former Sporting star has gone on to become the captain of the Manchester club, while also adding a Carabao Cup and FA Cup medal to his locker.

With Ruben Amorim set to arrive at Man United next week, Fernandes will be a key part of the new era in Manchester.

The midfielder’s experience and knowledge of the club will certainly help his fellow countryman settle in at Old Trafford and with the Red Devils fully focused on adding young talent to their squad, the 30-year-old will also have a role in guiding them.

Gary Neville has been critical of Manchester United and their recruitment in the last decade.

Since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson from the club, the Red Devils have struggled on and off the pitch and their standards have dropped significantly.

Man United have been unable to find the right manager for the last ten years.

They have tried and tested David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Erik ten Hag but nobody has been able to deliver a league title for the club.

Man United have spent heavily in the market to sign new players but most of their expensive recruitments have struggled to perform.

Neville believes that the only good signing Man United have made in the last decade is Bruno Fernandes.

The Portuguese midfielder has been the main creative force of the team since joining the club and since his arrival at Old Trafford, he has been the midfielder with the most goals and assists in the Premier League.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said, as reported by The Mirror:

“He has to get the best out of the players. The players need to take responsibility for what’s happened in the last 10 years. The club have signed a lot of players that other clubs wanted and when those players have arrived at Manchester United they’ve deteriorated.

“Why is that? It could be the coach, it could be the players, it could be the environment is too big for them, whatever it is it has to change because if he [Amorim] doesn’t change that he will fall the same way the rest of them have.”

“Only really Bruno I can think of in 10 years has signed for the club and done more than I thought he would. I can’t think of any other player. That’s £1.8bn spent in the last 10 years, that’s one thing that has to change.”

New manager Ruben Amorim will now be given the responsibility to turnaround the fortunes of the club and correct all the wrong decisions they have made in recent years.

The 39-year-old manager will have to get his recruitment policy right at the club and make sure that the club is spending money on the right players.

Man United will go through another transition period under Ruben Amorim

Amorim, who has been linked with a move for Sporting defender Ousmane Diomande, will have to first and foremost build a unique identity of the team and how they play football.

He would know that scrutiny at Old Trafford would be much more than in Portuguese football and his every move will be questioned and followed closely at the club.

Only time will tell if he is the right man for them but a change from Ten Hag was much needed at the club.

It seems Ruben Amorim’s arrival at Manchester United would be popular with Red Devils midfield star Bruno Fernandes.

The Portugal international is understood to be delighted with his fellow countryman taking over from Erik ten Hag, and he’s previously tipped his compatriot to have the qualities for a big career in the Premier League or one of the other major leagues in Europe.

Speaking to SportTV last year, as quoted and translated by BBC Sport, Fernandes spoke highly of Amorim, saying he had everything it took to succeed at the very highest level of management.

Amorim has done hugely impressive work at Sporting Lisbon and now looks set to take on this big challenge at Old Trafford, but he’ll clearly have a supporter in Fernandes.

“I think all the qualities are there to be able to succeed in English, French, or Spanish football,” the 30-year-old said.

“Obviously, we know that the Premier League is probably the most desired. The qualities [to succeed in England] are there and he has everything to take the next step, in my opinion.”

Can Ruben Amorim revive Bruno Fernandes?

It’s been a difficult start to the season for almost everyone at United, with none of this team performing anywhere near its best.

Still, the dip in form of a star name like Fernandes is one of the most worrying developments we’ve seen, with the Portuguese midfield maestro yet to even score a goal in his first 13 appearances in all competitions.

Amorim will hope to get a lot more out of these players, and perhaps getting Fernandes again has to be seen as one of his priorities, as United look so much better when he’s at the top of his game.

Judging by what Fernandes has previously said about Amorim, the pair should prove to be a good fit at Old Trafford.

Manchester United have had an awful start to the season, and it’s clear that Ruben Amorim will have a difficult job on his hands if he completes his move to replace Erik ten Hag.

Amorim is expected to be named Man United manager imminently, and he’s done hugely impressive work at Sporting Lisbon in recent times, so fans will be hopeful about better times ahead at Old Trafford.

Still, it’s a difficult challenge awaiting him at United and one clear issue he needs to sort out as soon as possible is his struggling, wasteful and unconfident attacking players.

The stats show that four important players who should be providing goals for United have just four in the Premier League between them so far this season.

Manchester United’s misfiring goal-scorers will be a concern for Ruben Amorim

Alejandro Garnacho, who missed some big chances in the defeat to West Ham at the weekend, has just two goals so far, while Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have only one each, and Bruno Fernandes has zero.

This is far from good enough for four players of real quality, with Garnacho perhaps particularly frustrating as he’s shown so much quality during his time in the senior MUFC side, but still remains someone who wastes big opportunities.

The Argentine could probably have scored twice in the first half against West Ham, and we definitely haven’t seen enough from Hojlund and Zirkzee so far either.

Fernandes is understood to be excited about Amorim taking over, so fans will also hope this can spark a big improvement from him.

The Portuguese midfielder is usually a pretty reliable figure for goals from midfield, but he’s somewhat surprisingly yet to get off the mark at all in the Premier League this season.

If Fernandes can get back to form, that should help the whole United team, so Amorim surely needs to prioritise getting these four players clicking as soon as possible.

Manchester United are set to hire Ruben Amorim as their new manager to replace Erik ten Hag, and club sources have revealed to CaughtOffside that Bruno Fernandes is “delighted” with the decision.

The Portugal international is understood to be a huge admirer of his fellow countryman, who has done impressive work at Sporting Lisbon and who was also firmly on the radar of Manchester City.

Amorim is now closing in on moving to Man Utd following yesterday’s news that Ten Hag had been sacked after this dire start to the season at Old Trafford continued with another defeat to West Ham.

Although Fernandes sent Ten Hag a classy message via Instagram to thank the Dutchman for what he’d done, it’s not too surprising to hear that he’s thrilled to see Amorim coming in.

Most fans will surely feel Amorim has it in him to be a major upgrade on Ten Hag, who had badly struggled to implement his playing style in over two years in Manchester.

Will we see the real Bruno Fernandes under Ruben Amorim?

It’s not been a great start to the season for Fernandes, who has been a long way off his usual best form, but perhaps the arrival of Amorim can give him a lift.

One imagines most of the United squad will be pleased that a change has been made as they simply didn’t look happy under Ten Hag, but getting Fernandes firing again could be a particularly big boost for the team.

When Fernandes is at his best, he’s a world class attacking midfielder who can score and create, so for him to be struggling for the Red Devils has undoubtedly hurt the team.

It will be interesting to see how Amorim uses Fernandes and what tactical changes he brings to the team in general, but it certainly seemed like time for a change and this will bring fresh optimism to Old Trafford for the rest of the season ahead.

Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has broken his silence on Erik ten Hag’s sacking as manager today, expressing “hope” that the fans appreciate the work he did.

The Dutch tactician was not super popular with Man Utd fans after doing a pretty poor job overall, even if the team managed to win the FA Cup final last season, and the Carabao Cup final the year before that.

Fernandes has now posted the below on Instagram, sharing an image of himself and Ten Hag celebrating with the FA Cup trophy at the end of last season…

Ten Hag won’t necessarily be missed by United fans, but there were some good moments from the Dutch tactician, and he’s not the only manager who’s struggled at Old Trafford in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

United will now once again need to think about their ideal choice to be manager, but it’s not going to be easy for anyone to succeed in this environment, as the likes of Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal previously learned.

Erik ten Hag is gone, but Man United’s problems will surely continue

Other clubs have shown you can strike gold with managerial appointments, such as Arsenal with Mikel Arteta and Liverpool with Arne Slot, but United, Chelsea and Tottenham have struggled in that department in recent years.

We might have to wait a while to see who United decide to appoint next, but for now Ruud van Nistelrooy will be in charge as interim manager.

Van Nistelrooy had been Ten Hag’s assistant but will now get the chance to show what he can do as the main man in charge of the first-team.

Other names like Xavi and Thomas Frank could also be worth watching out for.
