The team of the week from the latest round of Premier League action is in, with players from Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and more featuring in Troy Deeney’s line up.

Still, it’s perhaps a bit of a surprise to see that Deeney didn’t select a single Liverpool player in his team of the week, given that the Reds fought back well to earn a 2-2 draw away to Arsenal.

See below for the full XI on BBC Sport, with Arsenal’s Thomas Partey doing well to earn a place after filling in well in an unfamiliar role at right-back, while there’s also no way Chelsea’s Cole Palmer could have been left out after his starring role for the Blues as they beat Newcastle United…

Premier League team of the week
Premier League team of the week (via BBC Sport)

Elsewhere, it’s a real mix from across the Premier League as we also see impressive performers from the likes of Crystal Palace, West Ham, Fulham, Nottingham Forest, and Wolves.

Brentford’s Bryan Mbuemo is also a name that’s becoming harder and harder to ignore as his superb season continues, so this probably won’t be the last team of the week we see him in.

Team of the week: Liverpool harshly overlooked?

Liverpool might not have been at their brilliant best against Arsenal, but Mohamed Salah came up with a crucial equaliser in the second half and was a threat throughout, while Trent Alexander-Arnold had a role in the goal and helped the Reds control the game a bit better when he inverted into midfield slightly more in the second half.

Liverpool fans won’t care too much, though, as they’ll simply be happy with a well-earned point from one of their toughest fixtures so far, with Arne Slot still only having one defeat to his name after a terrific start since replacing Jurgen Klopp at Anfield in the summer.

Newcastle United tried, but failed, to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace in the summer.

Eddie Howe identified the 24-year-old as his top target and had hopes of bringing him to St. James’ Park before the start of the season.

Despite being in negotiations with Palace for several weeks, and making multiple offers, including one worth £70 million, the two clubs failed to reach an agreement.

Guehi has been forced to continue at Selhurst Park, and although his future is still hugely uncertain, has remained a key figure for Oliver Glasner.

Newcastle United dealt blow in Marc Guehi pursuit

Although the Magpies are expected to try and sign the England international again, possibly in the January transfer window, it is unknown how Palace will respond despite the defender’s contract expiring in just 18 months.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown, who spoke to Football Insider, reckons the Eagles are ‘frustrated’ by how talks went in the summer and may not be so keen to reignite talks with their Premier League rivals.

“Is the situation with Newcastle going to be reignited or is somebody else going to come in?” he said.

“I don’t think people are going to come in at that same £70million price.

“Newcastle could come back in for him, but would the chairman at Crystal Palace bite the bullet and take less from them than they offered in the first place?

“I’ve heard they were a bit frustrated about the way that deal went with low-ball offers and whatnot. It would certainly come as a blow for Palace if they accepted a lower bid just six months later. They’ll definitely be reluctant to have those conversations.

“I think that deal would be difficult for Newcastle at this stage because things didn’t exactly go swimmingly last time. Neither side was totally happy with the way it went.“

Wout Faes among alternative targets

During his three years with Palace, Guehi, who now also has 18 caps for England, has directly contributed to eight goals in 121 games in all competitions.

Failure to sign the Abidjan-born centre-back at the second time of asking could force Howe to consider alternatives.

One name on the Englishman’s shortlist of possible targets is Leicester City and Belgium’s Wout Faes. The 26-year-old has two-and-a-half years left on his deal at the King Power but could move on at the end of the season, especially if the Foxes are relegated back to the Championship.

According to former Manchester United, Tottenham and West Ham scout Mick Brown, Liverpool are expected to make a move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

The England international has attracted attention from some of the biggest clubs in England.

He was heavily linked with a move to Newcastle United in the summer transfer window but a move failed to materialise for the 24-year-old centre-back.

He is expected to move away from Selhurst Park in the near future after impressive performances for his club and particularly for England at Euro 2024.

With Virgil Van Dijk’s future up in the air, Brown expects Liverpool to make a move for the talented defender to bring him to Anfield.

“He’s in the England team as their first-choice centre-back,” he told Football Insider.

“That always carries a certain premium, but which top clubs are looking for a centre-back?

“Liverpool are, from what I’ve heard, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see them make a move next summer.

“With the Van Dijk situation there as well, they’re looking at Guehi as a potential replacement.

“If he doesn’t sign a new contract there, they’ll be in desperate need of a top player there and I think Guehi definitely fits that bill.”

At the end of the season, Guehi will have just one year remaining on his contract at the club which means Palace will not be able to demand a huge fee for the defender.

With Van Dijk entering the final year of his contract at the club this season, signing a new defender might become Liverpool’s priority next year.

Marc Guehi would be the perfect signing for Liverpool

Guehi would be the ideal candidate to either replace the Dutch centre-back or become his partner in the Liverpool team if Van Dijk extends his contract.

The Palace defender would add quality in the Liverpool defense, even though they have been brilliant defensively this season under Arne Slot.

The Merseyside club have only conceded three goals in eight Premier League matches this season.

Newcastle United made a £70million move for the English defender in the summer but their move was rejected by the South London club.

Palace will not be able to demand the same figure next year for Guehi which means he could be available in a cut-price deal.

According to GiveMeSport, Gareth Southgate has reservations about replacing Oliver Glasner at Selhurst Park.

The reason behind the English manager’s increasing doubts is the uncertain future of some of the Crystal Palace players.

Eberechi Eze, Marc Guehi and Adam Wharton could all leave the club in the next twelve months after interest from some of the biggest clubs in the Premier League and that could stop Southgate from taking over the Palace job.

The South London club have started the season in disastrous form and they have still not managed to register a single win in the Premier League this season.

It is a huge difference from how they ended last season when Glasner’s team looked unbeatable, inspired by Michael Olise and Eze.

This season has been a completely different story for them and they are currently sitting in 18th position in the league, having won just three points from their eight matches.

They have equaled their worst ever start to a Premier League season but Glasner still has the support of the board.

Despite links with Southgate, the club have decided to show faith in the manager and he will not be sacked unless they feel there is a real chance of them getting relegated to the Championship.

On the other hand, Southgate is currently enjoying time away from football after a stressful spell with the England national team.

Gareth Southgate has history with Crystal Palace

He is adored by the Palace fans, having made more than 100 appearances for the club, but he is currently not thinking about taking the job at Selhurst Park if the Eagles sack Glasner.

As per the report, Man City admire Palace midfielder Wharton while the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham have shown interest in signing Eze.

Newcastle United’s interest in Guehi is not a secret but they could be joined by other clubs as well when the England international finally decides to move away from the South London club.

Southgate has reservations about the project at Palace and you can understand why he feels that way considering how they are operating at the moment.

Liverpool would reportedly be the favoured destination for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, who is also still on the radar of Newcastle United.

Guehi has shone at Selhurst Park and also performed well for England at Euro 2024 in the summer, so it makes sense that he’s now being linked with bigger clubs, especially as Palace’s form has gone downhill recently.

According to Football Insider, Guehi has told friends that his preferred next club would be Liverpool if he ends up leaving Selhurst Park, which could be good news for the Reds.

The 24-year-old looks like an ideal long-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk at Anfield, with the Netherlands international edging towards the end of his contract.

It may still be that Van Dijk will sign a new deal, but even if he stays at Liverpool, they surely need to look ahead to the future anyway.

Guehi is surely good enough to come in and perhaps partner Van Dijk initially before then replacing him in the longer term, though it remains to be seen if LFC will make him one of their priorities.

Even if Guehi is keen to join Liverpool, one imagines the Merseyside giants will also have other names they’re considering at the back.

Sources recently told CaughtOffside that Loic Bade and Goncalo Inacio are two names to watch out for in that position, but there could also be an advantage to pursuing Guehi due to the fact that he’s proven in the Premier League.

At the same time, however, the England international would also probably be more expensive for precisely those reasons, while Palace will also surely be desperate to avoid losing such an important player to a rival.

Palace have suffered since selling Michael Olise to Bayern Munich this summer, so they could really do without another saga like this after such a poor start to the new season.

Marc Guehi is Eddie Howe’s first-choice central defender.

The 46-year-old tried to sign the Crystal Palace centre-back in the summer but saw four bids, including one worth £70 million, turned down.

The Eagles obviously want to keep hold of the England international and have hopes of extending his contract, which is due to expire in 18 months.

The 24-year-old has yet to agree to terms though, and that is set to reignite Newcastle’s interest.

Readying more negotiations once the January transfer window opens, the Magpies are hoping to land their man once and for all.

Eddie Howe adds Wout Faes to list of Marc Guehi alternatives

And according to a recent report from Football Insider, not only could Howe be successful in his pursuit but the Geordies could agree to a cut-price deal.

However, although Guehi is the Magpies’ top target, keen to avoid a repeat situation which saw them fail to bring in any centre-back in the summer, Howe has eyes on two possible alternatives, including Leicester City’s Wout Faes.

Having conceded 14 domestic goals already this season, the Foxes, with Faes at the back, have one of the country’s leakiest defences, so suggestions Howe wants to sign him in place of Guehi will undoubtedly disappoint fans.

RB Leipzig’s Castello Lukeba is the other name on Howe’s shortlist.

Newcastle haven’t given up hope of landing Crystal Palace centre-back, Marc Guehi, though it’s believed the defender would prefer a move to Liverpool.

The player has already admitted that the speculation surrounding his future last summer was tough to deal with.

Given their own defensive problems, Man United were also rumoured to be sniffing around the England international.

Newcastle preparing huge bid for Palace ace Marc Guehi

At just 24 years of age, Guehi has established himself as a stalwart for both club and country, so it’s no wonder that he remains coveted by Palace’s Premier League rivals.

According to TeamTalk, Newcastle, who had four previous bids turned down during the summer transfer window, will go back in for Guehi in January, and this time will offer a record-breaking £80m.

That’s believed to be closer to the valuation that the Eagles have put on their man, and would almost certainly open the doors for all parties to get around the negotiating table.

However, the big stumbling block is that the outlet are also reporting that the player would prefer a move to Liverpool.

That said, it’s understood that the Reds wouldn’t be willing to match Newcastle’s offer in the January window, potentially leaving Guehi stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Arne Slot will no doubt be biding his time to see if Virgil van Dijk will extend his time at Anfield in the first instance because should he do so, that makes a move for Guehi a little less urgent.

Newcastle don’t really have that luxury, and Eddie Howe and his board will almost certainly want to strike at the earliest opportunity.

For now, Guehi will have to remain focused on helping Palace move up the Premier League table.

After seven games of the 2024/25 season, they’ve still not won a match and are way down in 18th position.

With just over six months left until his Liverpool contract comes to an end, it’s looking more and more likely that Virgil van Dijk will leave the club next summer, and the Reds are seemingly already making contingency plans.

Although the club appear willing to offer the Dutchman a new deal, they can’t rest on their laurels, given that van Dijk can speak to other clubs from January.

There’s no guarantee that the centre-back will accept any offer that the Reds make either.

Liverpool identify their replacement for Virgil van Dijk

Indeed, one pundit believes that contract situation surrounding van Dijk and team-mates Mo Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold is “worrying.”

CaughtOffside have been advised by sources close to the club that they remain keen on boosting their defensive strength, and to that end they’ve targeted 6ft 2in Nico Schlotterbeck.

The Borussia Dortmund defender, who also plays for the German national team, has been drawing attention with his standout performances.

Liverpool want Nico Schlotterbeck to replace Virgil van Dijk.

Sources advance that Liverpool are prepared to offer around €50 million for Schlotterbeck, with a planned annual salary of €7 million, and the move is considered to be part of Liverpool’s strategy to fortify their backline.

However, the Reds may not get things all their own way as sources have also indicated that Newcastle United could enter the race if they’re still unable to prise Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.

Due to financial constraints and the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR), the transfer might be more challenging for the Magpies, but Eddie Howe also sees Schlotterbeck as a key addition to the Newcastle defence.

Clearly, the next few months are key for the Anfield-based outfit, and for Arne Slot.

After a quiet transfer window in the summer, things will need to ramp up in that regard, particularly if Liverpool end up waving goodbye to their talented trio.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi has admitted he found his busy summer ‘tough’ to handle.

After a fine 2023/24 campaign with the Eagles, Guehi commanded a starting berth for England at Euro 2024, helping the Three Lions reach the final where they lost 2-1 to Spain.

But throughout the tournament and the rest of the summer, Guehi also had to handle transfer links to Newcastle United.

Guehi’s future at Selhurst Park often looked in doubt but in the end, Newcastle didn’t come forth with an offer Palace found acceptable. Now, the 24-year-old is being more heavily linked with Liverpool.

Upon remaining in south London, Guehi has endured a difficult start to the 2024/25 season with Crystal Palace, who remain winless after seven games, sitting 18th in the Premier League with just three points on the board.

Between the hectic summer, constant speculation surrounding his future and a difficult start to the new campaign, it’s been a lot to take on for Guehi.

“I’d say [it’s been] quite tough not having a pre-season, not having much of a break and going straight back into it,” the former Chelsea centre-back said (via talkSPORT).

“I kind of handled it as best as I can. The Euros was such an amazing experience, but just not quite getting there.

“And since then I’ve just tried to get my head down, tried to get to work [with Newcastle rumours ongoing].

“It’s been a tough start for us at Palace, but I think everyone’s pulling in the right direction to try and get ourselves back to where we want to be.”

Following the international break, Guehi’s Palace travel to Nottingham Forest looking to finally land their first league win of the season.

Newcastle United are unlikely to give up their pursuit of Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi in 2025 after the Magpies pushed hard for the England international over the summer.

Eddie Howe was on the lookout for a new centre-back during the latest transfer window and the Tyneside club identified Guehi as their top target following his impressive showings at Euro 2024 with England.

Newcastle pushed hard for the 24-year-old and submitted up to four bids for the Crystal Palace star.

The final offer was worth £65m, however, the Eagles rejected the proposal as they held out for over £70m. As a result, Newcastle decided to walk away but are prepared to test their Premier League rivals’ resolve again in January when the defender enters the remaining 18 months of his contract.

Should Guehi not leave then, the summer will certainly see the Crystal Palace star depart Selhurst Park as the South London outfit would get the best deal then with his contract entering its final year.

The problem for Newcastle is that more clubs will enter the race and there have also been rumours of Liverpool showing interest in the England international.

Peter Crouch thinks Marc Guehi will leave Crystal Palace in 2025

One man who believes that Guehi will leave Crystal Palace in 2025 is TNT Sports pundit Peter Crouch.

“That was a big, big call for this football club [Palace] to keep hold of him,” the former Liverpool star told TNT Sports via the Daily Mail before the Eagles’ 1-0 defeat to the Reds last Saturday. “Newcastle I think came in with £70m, it was their number one target.

“It went on all summer, yeah. I think Guehi will go, I think they’ll really struggle to keep hold of him, a few clubs like Liverpool coming in for him as well. I think he’s done well to kind of get on with it.

“There was a lot of interest after the Euros for him, but, you know, he’s got his head down. He’s getting on with it, and he’s got to do his job for Palace.”
