Arsenal crashed to a disappointing defeat against Newcastle United in the Premier League yesterday.

Alexander Isak scored the only goal of the game early in the first half and Arsenal struggled to get back on level terms. The Gunners failed to create too many goalscoring opportunities, and they will be left frustrated with the performance of the attacking unit.

Gabriel Martinelli was quite disappointing in particular, and the Brazilian winger failed to take a single shot on target during his time on the pitch. The 23-year-old completed just one successful dribble during his 61 minutes on the pitch as well.

Martinelli was regarded as one of the finest attacking prospects at the club, but his performances have been rather underwhelming since last season. He scored just eight goals across all competitions last season and so far he has picked up just two goals and two assists for the Gunners.

Arsenal need to upgrade on Gabriel Martinelli

It would be ideal for Mikel Arteta to find an upgrade on the South American in the coming months. There is no doubt that he could still be a very useful squad player for Arsenal, but the Gunners need better players at their disposal if they want to match up to the European elite. They need a quality winger who can create goalscoring opportunities and chip in with goals regularly as well.

Martinelli certainly has the potential to develop into a top-class player, but he needs to improve his end product.

It will be interesting to see if Arsenal decide to dip into the transfer market in January for a dynamic attacker who can operate on the flanks as well as centrally. It is evident that they need goals in their attacking unit. Gabriel Jesus has not been able to score goals consistently, and Kai Havertz is not a prolific goalscorer either.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta might need to have a serious think about Gabriel Martinelli after another below-par display for the club in yesterday’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool.

The Brazilian winger has a fine reputation at the Emirates Stadium after arriving with plenty of expectations on his shoulders as he looked like a real talent for the future, and in the 2022/23 campaign it looked like we were finally seeing him become more consistent and mature with his performances.

However, Martinelli’s form dipped a lot last season and he’s still struggling to get back to his best now, with the 23-year-old emerging with some poor stats from last night’s draw at home to Liverpool.

It was clear from watching the game that Martinelli wasn’t really contributing enough, and the stats back that up, as he was dispossessed three times, and had a pretty low pass success rate of just 61%.

By contrast, Bukayo Saka was not dispossessed once in the entire game, while Leandro Trossard was only dispossessed once and had a pass success rate of 80%.

On the opposite side, Luis Diaz was also dispossessed three times, but at least had a pass success rate of 90%, while he picked up the assist for the Virgil van Dijk goal.

Gabriel Martinelli – is it time for Mikel Arteta to drop the Arsenal winger?

Martinelli has shown some signs of getting back to his best recently, but it’s still not quite the Martinelli we saw when he was absolutely flying in that 2022/23 campaign.

In truth, Arsenal have probably progressed so much since then that the higher standards in the team mean Martinelli has become a bit of a passenger.

Perhaps he can still turn things around, but for now it would surely make sense for AFC to take to the market for a top class winger as a replacement, someone like Nico Williams.

Arsenal legend Lauren has made it clear he thinks his old club need to sign a number 9 to help players like Bukayo Saka in attack.

The former Cameroon international has explained that that’s one area of the squad that Mikel Arteta is still lacking in, with the team perhaps in need of a bit of a Plan B for some games where they don’t have as much of the ball.

Arsenal currently have Kai Havertz as their first-choice striker, but it’s not always been his best position, with the Germany international perhaps better utilised in an attacking midfield role as he’s not exactly someone who looks capable of scoring 20-25 goals a season.

Gabriel Jesus is also an option for Arteta, but he’s mostly been poor since joining the Gunners from Manchester City, having had issues staying fit, and not being the most prolific attacker when he has been on the pitch.

Lauren is surely right, in that case, that AFC would benefit from another focal point in their attack to help take the pressure off the likes of Saka and Gabriel Martinelli to provide most of the threat in the final third.

Arsenal need a no.9, says former Invincible Lauren

“I have always said that we need a number 9 that can help, Bukayo Saka, help Gabriel Jesus, help Martinelli in the final third. This is something that would be great for Arsenal,” Lauren told the Italian Football Podcast.

“Because when you have different versions and ways to attack the opponent. Like when you play a dominant side like Man City, you need to defend in a low block many times during the game. You need to go into transition going forward, on the left Martinelli can do that. But if you have another number 9 to help hold up the ball to allow the team to come out from the back, that would be fantastic.

“Therefore, we maybe need another 9 different to the ones we have in the squad to help us reach our goals by the end of the season.”

Arsenal have been urged to seal a transfer deal for Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, as former Gunners ace Jermaine Pennant can see him being a perfect fit at the Emirates Stadium.

The Sweden international has certainly been an impressive performer during his time at St James’ Park, and it’s easy to see him attracting interest from bigger clubs sooner or later.

Newcastle surely won’t want to sell Isak to Arsenal or anyone else, but Pennant has talked up the potential move as he feels Mikel Arteta’s side still lack a little something in attack.

Speaking at the launch of Ladbrokes’ “Gaffer of all Accas”, Pennant admitted he had some concerns about how well Arsenal will cope without the injured Bukayo Saka, while he’s also a little unconvinced by Gabriel Martinelli and Raheem Sterling.

Pennant praised Kai Havertz, but suggested it’s still not quite enough for Arsenal, so he’s made it clear he’d like to see Isak coming in due to his pace, strength and proven track record in the Premier League.

Alexander Isak transfer: Would he be the perfect striker for Arsenal?

“At the minute, Arsenal do have strength in depth, especially defensively. But, as we saw at the weekend, as soon as Bukayo Saka is out, they haven’t really got a good, top replacement,” Pennant said.

“Raheem Sterling is a great player, but at the moment, he’s no Saka, and he’s not producing the same numbers as what Saka produces. Gabriel Martinelli, again, is another great player, but he blows a little bit hot and cold. Kai Havertz is someone who I wrote off at the start of the season, but to be fair to him, he’s been great. But throughout the season, if you’re relying on him, I think you’re going to want a little bit more.

“What I’d suggest is a number nine; a good, solid number nine. There aren’t many out there at the moment, but Alexander Isak is someone who I think would fit perfectly. He’s quick, he’s strong, and he’s proven he can score goals in this division… I’m sure he would get a lot more, playing for a team like Arsenal, who create so many chances.

“They’ve got a lot of defensive players now; that was their weak point over the years, but they’ve almost got an overflow of top defenders, and defensive players, now. Jorginho, Declan Rice and Thomas Partey can all play in the same position, and they’ve got so much cover at the back. I think it’s just in the attacking areas which is where they should look to strengthen again.”

Arsenal took the lead in their Champions League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk in fortunate circumstances as Gabriel Martinelli’s shot went in off the back of the post and in via the Ukrainian’s goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk.

Shakhtar frustrated the Premier League side to a degree throughout the first half but the Gunners still created chances against their opposition, while the home fans were also treated to a lovely moment of skill from Leandro Trossard.

Mikel Arteta’s men kept plucking away and eventually found a breakthrough with 29 minutes on the clock. It came in unfortunate circumstances for goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk as Martinelli’s shot cannoned in off the back of the post and in via the Shakhtar goalkeeper.

The Brazilian talent did not care how it reached the back of the net as the Premier League team are on course to make it back-to-back wins in the Champions League.

Arsenal will hope to kick on in the second half as a positive result will put to bed their poor showing against Bournemouth at the weekend. The North London outfit lost 2-0 to the Cherries with the result leaving Arteta’s team four points behind league leaders Liverpool.

The next few weeks will be crucial for Arsenal’s hopes for the 2024/25 campaign and a good result against Shakhtar Donetsk will help kickstart it.

Arsenal return to Champions League action on Tuesday night as the Premier League giants host Shakhtar Donetsk at the Emirates Stadium.

Mikel Arteta’s men have picked up four points on their Champions League adventure so far drawing with Atalanta on matchday 1 and achieving a big victory over PSG last time out. The North London club were excellent against the French champions and will be looking to continue that on Tuesday night.

Arsenal are also looking to bounce back from a disappointing result in the Premier League at the weekend as the Gunners were beaten 2-0 by Bournemouth, leaving Arteta’s team four points behind leaders Liverpool.

Bukayo Saka was a big miss for the London outfit at the weekend and the winger is still not available for the Shakhtar Donetsk clash.

Arteta has made two changes from the Bournemouth defeat with Mikel Merino and Raheem Sterling being replaced by Brazilian duo Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus.

Confirmed Arsenal starting 11

As for Shakhtar Donetsk, the Ukrainian side have not made the start to the season they would have wanted as they currently sit fourth in their league and have yet to win a match in the Champions League.

Marino Pusic’s team drew their opening match 0-0 with Girona before suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat at the hands of Atalanta last time out. This has left them 27th in the European standings and the Ukrainian team face a very tough task in trying to get points off of Arsenal.

Shakhtar were 1-0 winners over Kolos on Friday and Pusic has made one change from that victory with Danylo Sikan coming into the starting 11 for Newerton.

Theo Walcott believes Gabriel Martinelli’s one-on-one miss in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth could prove extremely costly for Arsenal.

The Gunners travelled to the South Coast unbeaten in all competitions this season, just one point adrift of early Premier League leaders Liverpool.

However, William Saliba was sent off after just 30 minutes, leaving Mikel Arteta’s men with a mountain to climb at the Vitality Stadium — especially without injured trio Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and Jurrien Timber.

But despite being a man down, Arsenal still managed to carve out some decent opportunities.

Most notably, Martinelli missed a golden opportunity in the 69th minute after being played in by Mikel Merino, with Arsenal pouncing on a loose pass from Bournemouth goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Just a minute later, Ryan Christie gave the Cherries the lead, while Justin Kluivert finished the job from the penalty spot shortly after.

Saliba’s red card for pulling down Evanlison will be the most talked about moment from the match.

However, former Arsenal winger Walcott believes Martinelli’s miss could be a ‘massive moment’ in the club’s season, urging the Brazilian to rapidly improve his finishing.

“This side of Martinelli where we always feel he could improve these opportunities, which he practices endlessly. And for me, he gives the goalkeeper a very clear way he’s going to go straight away. He opens up his body too soon,” Walcott told Sky Sports of Martinelli, who has scored just eight goals in his last 43 Premier League appearances since the start of last season.

Walcott continued: “Of course, it’s a great save, but look, this is Arsenal, they want to win the league. It’s a massive moment for not just Arsenal, but for Martinelli himself.

“You don’t have to overthink it. I think at times, Martinelli, when he has a bit more time on the ball, he actually overthinks it instead of actually doing something instinctive.

And I think that’s probably what he’s down for at times with his goalscoring record at the moment.”

Arsenal not overly concerned by Gabriel Martinelli injury, but could it mean a fresh chance for Gabriel Jesus?

I can only imagine what Mikel Arteta was thinking when news filtered back to Arsenal that Gabriel Martinelli had followed Bukayo Saka by picking up an injury while on international duty.

It’s too early to say yet whether the calf problem Martinelli is suffering from will rule the Brazilian out of Saturday’s trip to Bournemouth. My understanding is that – following conversations with the Brazilian team’s medical staff – there is not much concern at Arsenal over the severity of Martinelli’s issue.

It might still force him to miss Saturday’s game, but that is a decision that will be taken on Friday before the team makes the trip to the south coast following their final training session at London Colney.

This article was originally published on the Daily Briefing, a subscription service. If you would like to receive Charles Watts’ exclusive articles via email ahead of publication on caughtoffside.com, please sign-up for the service at thedailybriefing.io

Arsenal have not insisted that Martinelli returns to the UK early. They are comfortable with him remaining with Brazil and returning as scheduled with Gabriel Magalhaes following the match with Peru.

So it’s too early to rule him out of contention for the weekend, but if he were to miss out then Arteta does have a fair few options to call upon, even if Saka is also absent.

Gabriel Jesus is one of those options. He struggled playing as the central striker against Southampton before the international break, but he’s shown he can be a handy option playing out wide.

He can play on the right or on the left and it would not surprise me to see Arteta utilise him out wide at Bournemouth, although the more likely alternative to Martinelli on the left would be Raheem Sterling.

Gabriel Martinelli could be an injury doubt for Arsenal's next game

Jesus is clearly struggling for confidence right now. You can see that by the way he’s playing. He’s thinking about things too much and taking too many touches when he’s in possession.

When Jesus is at his best he does things off the cuff. He creates chaos with his movement and his work rate. But right now he’s bringing more confusion than chaos with his play.

I think there’s certainly a chance this could be his final season at the club, but obviously that is a decision that will be taken in the summer should any suitable offers arrive.

I do expect Arsenal to bring in a forward and that would limit Jesus’ chances further. He’s way behind Kai Havertz now in the pecking order and it’s tough to see him turning that round at present given the form of both players.

But whatever happens he still has a big part to play this season.

Arsenal are going to need Jesus, so it’s crucial they help him improve and find his confidence again because if they can do that then they have a player who has the quality to still have a major say on this campaign.

My thoughts on the Mikel Arteta vs Unai Emery debate

Honestly, the Unai Emery debate when it comes to Arsenal really does bore me now. I just don’t understand how it is still a thing.

Emery is doing fantastic things at Aston Villa and I’m happy for him because he’s clearly an excellent manager and he was a pleasure to deal with when he was in charge at Arsenal.

But no matter what he does at Villa and what they go on to achieve, it will not change the fact that Arsenal were absolutely correct to get rid of him when they did.

It was the right decision. In fact, it was the only decision. He just had to go.

The results were woeful, the football was even worse and the Emirates was half empty every other week. He’d lost the majority of the fans and it was blatantly obvious that he’d lost large swathes of the changing room as well.

It just didn’t work out and that happens.

That’s not a slant against Emery. Sometimes things just didn’t fit and that’s what happened with him at Arsenal.

He was unlucky as well. He came in at a time when there were so many changes happening behind the scenes. Ivan Gazidis, the man who appointed him, left soon after he arrived and that departure created a power vacuum at the club.

There was a battle behind the scenes that led to Raul Sanllehi taking control and he brought in some players that Emery didn’t really want.

So he had to deal with a lot and maybe if he’d been given the type of power that Mikel Arteta had been given things might have been different.

But that argument is all ifs and buts. That’s why I just don’t get why it is still a thing.

The fact is, everyone has come out of it better.

Emery has gone on to do fantastic things, first with Villarreal and now with Villa. While Arsenal have transformed themselves completely having turned to Arteta.

It’s a win, win for everyone and that really should be the end of the discussion.

Georgiy Sudakov to Arsenal transfer links make sense

Georgiy Sudakov has been linked with Arsenal recently and they will be able to have a close up view of his talents on Tuesday night when Shakhtar Donetsk visit the Emirates in the Champions League.

Sudakov’s stock is rising fast, with clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester City, Spurs and Liverpool all said to be interested in the attacking midfielder.

It’s too early to say whether Arsenal will actually make a move for the 22-year-old, but it’s no surprise to see him mentioned as a potential target for the club.

He fits the profile that Mikel Arteta and Edu like and plays in an area where Arsenal will look to strengthen over the next few windows.

Sudakov likes to get forward from midfield and operate in the No.10 role, but he can also play deeper and with Thomas Partey and Jorginho expected to move on at the end of the season and Mikel Merino approaching his 30s, Arsenal will be looking to add some fresh blood to their midfield options.

They will know, however, due to their highly publicised chase of Mykhailo Mudryk, that Shakhtar are not an easy club to do business with.

So if they do decide to pursue Sudakov, they will be aware that he would not come cheap and Mudryk’s struggles since joining Chelsea show how big a step in class it is when moving from Ukraine to the Premier League.

That should certainly be a warning to any interested parties.

Why haven’t Edu and Arsenal turned to the Brazilian market more?

Arsenal fans have been a bit surprised at the club’s reluctance to enter into the Brazilian market of late.

We’ve seen lots of clubs doing it, particularly Chelsea and of course Real Madrid, but Arsenal have kept their powder dry since the signings of Gabriel Martinelli and Marquinhos.

There was an expectation when Edu was appointed that, given his connections in Brazil, the club would look to take advantage of the market over there, but it just hasn’t really happened.

There are always links and we’ve seen that recently with Vitor Reis, but so far Arsenal have preferred to focus their business on the European market.

I can’t say for certain why that is, but my hunch is that they have preferred to move for players they believe will acclimatise quicker to the demands of the Premier League.

Arsenal have been on a rapid rise in the last few years and their approach to building their squad has been carefully managed.

They have signed project players, but maybe they believe the risk has just been too great when it comes to moving for young Brazilian talent, especially given the transfer fees they are now commanding.

Arsenal have received another injury scare over the weekend as it has emerged that Gabriel Martinelli has picked up a problem in his calf while away with Brazil and that has now prompted the Premier League club to make contact with the national team.

The 23-year-old was spotted wearing tape during a training session with Brazil and is reportedly being accompanied by the team doctor at the Selecao’s hotel.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) confirmed the Arsenal star’s issue overnight on Sunday that the winger has been sent for an MRI scan on a right calf problem.

“The athlete continues to undergo physiotherapy treatment under the care of the Brazilian national team’s medical department.”

The report states that Martinelli is due to remain with the Brazil squad for further treatment this week rather than returning to Arsenal early, but it now looks unlikely to play any part in Brazil’s match against Peru on Tuesday night.

Concerned by the welfare of their player, Fabrizio Romano reports that Arsenal have now made contact with Brazil’s medical staff to understand what has happened to Martinelli and will have concerns upon the return of the Premier League this weekend as the Gunners prepare for a trip to Bournemouth.

Gabriel Martinelli’s injury could be a huge setback for Arsenal

Martinelli has been a crucial player for Arsenal so far this season with the winger starting in every match across all competitions so far – apart from the Gunners’ Carabao Cup demolition of Bolton.

The Brazil star has produced two goals and two assists across 10 matches with the Brazilian netting a crucial goal last time out against Southampton.

His performances throughout the opening part of the 2024/25 campaign are what saw Martinelli recalled to Dorival Junior’s Brazil squad for their 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Peru, having been dropped for September meetings with Ecuador and Paraguay after being used only sparingly during the Copa America tournament in the United States over the summer.

Everyone is hoping that the winger’s injury is not too serious as Arsenal could be in bad shape come the weekend as the current international break has already seen Bukayo Saka limp off.
