England produced a brilliant performance in Greece despite being without many regulars, and that’s given Thomas Tuchel some food for thought for when he takes over in January according to Stan Collymore.

Although some players were missing through injury, it was blindingly obvious that the withdrawals of others were down to directions from their clubs.

The Nations League has never really been a tournament that’s been taken to, and with so many other fixtures ahead this season, a fortnight’s rest for players now, could benefit them at the business end of the season.

Tuchel has food for thought says Collymore

Current England boss, Lee Carsley, had already made some big calls previously, and Curtis Jones’ brilliant debut was just one of many bright spots in Thursday night’s fixture.

Stan Collymore believes that it could well be a watershed moment for the national team.

“I think that Harry Kane will actually have been briefed to let it be known how important it is to turn up for England on a regular basis, because I don’t think he’s a particularly contentious individual,” he said to CaughtOffside for his exclusive column.

“And surprise, surprise, when you don’t have the best players available, when players have just got to put the kit on, go out and do a job without all the big build up, lo and behold; Madueke, excellent. Ollie Watkins, a goal. Curtis Jones, excellent finish. Players like Morgan Gibbs White coming on.

“Utilising a full squad of 23 poses questions such as is Harry Kane gonna start? Is Ollie Watkins going to start? Where’s Declan Rice? Where’s Bukayo Saka?

“When you strip all that back, the manager can pick players who can look them in the eye and say that yes, EVERY Three Lions game is important to me.

“Make no bones about it, just because Greece are low down in the rankings and we’re fourth, they turned us over at Wembley and we owed them one.

Greece 0-3 England: Player ratings as ‘outstanding’ Liverpool star enjoys perfect debut

“Without all the bells and whistles and the superstars that were going to turn up and give them a hiding I think a lot of England fans would have thought that we might just about nick a win and it might be boring.

“The result on Thursday is proof that Thomas Tuchel must come in and almost be blind about the names. Get his scouts out there, pick on form, pick players for his system. If that means no Harry Kane, if that means no Jude Bellingham, if that means no Bukayo Saka, so be it.

“The balance and blend was there in Greece in a way that it hasn’t been in the preceding games so it’s very much food for thought for Tuchel.”

Whether Tuchel will be brave enough to be the new broom that comes in and sweeps clean isn’t clear, though with a stated aim of bringing the World Cup back to England 60 years after their last win, the German will surely consider any and all alternatives available to him.

Gareth Southgate has changed the perception of what playing for England means and is about, and he certainly wasn’t frightened to modify his starting XI and squad more generally if he felt it necessary.

Players that didn’t make themselves available on Thursday or this coming Sunday may have inadvertently done themselves a huge disservice.

In his exclusive column for CaughtOffside, former Aston Villa attacker Stan Collymore discusses some of football’s biggest talking points, including what Ruben Amorim can expect at Man United, is Pep Guardiola ready to lead Man City for a few more years, why Thomas Tuchel has food for thought for England and why Mikel Arteta just isn’t very good.

Is Guardiola ready and able to lead City for another few years?

Can Pep Guardiola continue to lead Man City

I think that Manchester City are just going through what is a cyclical process of all teams that are routine winners.

If you look at the bar that they set over the Pep Guardiola years so far, it’s been so high that it’s virtually impossible. We are talking about eight years of continued success whether it be Champions League, Premier Leagues, FA Cups, League Cups… they’ve won the lot.

To be able to do that, firstly, you need to completely overhaul the club every few years, which they’ve done successfully. From Aguero to Haaland as an example.

You look at the players that Pep inherited and the players that he has now, and there’s been a huge difference. He’s also massively improved players and they’re all playing at eight or nine out of 10. Not only that, Pep has also raised their awareness of the sport that they play, which I think will be good for coaching down the line with a number of players.

I do think though this is potentially the end of a cycle, and I think that the decision that needs to be made by the board is for them to go for another coach who will implement a new 6/7/8 year cycle.

Look, Pep could stay there for 20 years if he wants to, but he’s got to answer the questions himself. If it becomes about money, how much money does he need, because the club would pay him £20m a year no problem. They’ve got the best man in the in the world.

The other thing of course is that time waits for no man, and as you’ve got younger, fresher coaches coming through it will be very interesting to see how the likes of Amorim, for example, compare to him tactically and technically.

Is Pep a bit sick and tired of asking the same questions of his players week in and week out? Does that feeling transmit to players? Is he as fresh on the training ground as he once was? Is he as manic as he was?

Players that have won everything look around and go ‘do I want to push myself through that barrier again?’

I think it’s just the natural ending of a cycle and the only two main questions I’ve got is whether Pep has the hunger to be able to handle another 6/7/8 year cycle or could it be somebody else? And secondly, if the latter scenario is the case, at the end of this season could we see one of the more revolutionary Manchester City transfer windows, with the cull of up to eight first-team players?

Fergie’s United, the great Milan teams, the great Real Madrid teams, the great Barcelona teams… the cycle always ends. The question is whether Pep is committed, brave and resourceful enough to push himself through another few years.

Kane was right to moan about England players; now Tuchel has food for thought

I can understand Harry Kane’s view on players that are starting to dip out of England games, even if the context of this is that it’s the third or fourth international break in a year in a competition that is meh at best and whereby a lot of club managers and coaches will tell their players ‘be very careful, don’t put yourself on the line, we’ve got big games to come.’

Ryan Giggs used to do something similar for almost every Wales friendly, and it’s effectively managers saying that at this stage in the Nations League, it’s not important enough to be putting our players on the line – and I agree with them.

However, it’s very corrosive if you start having so many players missing. Once they start to dip out of Nations League games without any punishment but then walk back into the squad for a World Cup qualifier, for example, then it becomes about players getting special treatment.

I think that Harry Kane will actually have been briefed to let it be known how important it is to turn up for England on a regular basis, because I don’t think he’s a particularly contentious individual.

And surprise, surprise, when you don’t have the best players available, when players have just got to put the kit on, go out and do a job without all the big build up, lo and behold; Madueke, excellent. Ollie Watkins, a goal. Curtis Jones, excellent finish. Players like Morgan Gibbs White coming on.

Make no bones about it, just because Greece are low down in the rankings and we’re fourth, they turned us over at Wembley and we owed them one.

The balance and blend was there in Greece in a way that it hasn’t been in the preceding games so it’s very much food for thought for Tuchel.

It’s very clear what Ruben Amorim should expect at Man United

Ruben Amorim will have clear expectations

So… Ruben Amarim has finally arrived in Manchester and quickly sent Ruud van Nistelrooy packing. That shouldn’t surprise anyone and I don’t think that the Dutchman needed to be pushed by the new man in order to get him out.

He will have expected it, and with his coaching staff going too, van Nistelrooy may find opportunities open up for him elsewhere. There are rumours of him going to West Ham so that’s one to watch.

In terms of Amorim coming in, I think that every good manager that I’ve played under, and every good manager that I’ve seen on day one says everybody’s got a clean slate.

Players that have been injured, players that were out in the wilderness, players that have been forced to train with the U21s, U23s or the kids get an arm around them. He’ll also want absolute honesty so that he can say to players like Luke Shaw, for example, ‘can you get to a level where you play 30 plus games a season?’

If the honest answer is no, then I think he’s got to get rid of those players because I think that if you look at winning teams, they have a lot of players that play a lot of games.

I know that in the last couple of seasons Kevin De Bruyne has had his injury problems, but that was after the bulk of being involved in all of Man City’s major triumphs.

Man United need all of their players to buy into what Amorim wants to do, and that will be fresh, lively and intense training sessions, which will be taken through into games. It will be hanging on his every word. It might be picking out three or four trusted senior players in the dressing room to cover all his bases but everybody has to play their part.

It’s very simple. If a player’s level isn’t right, they have to understand that they’re going to be on the bench or not even in a match day squad under Amorim. I think that kind of clear communication has obviously been lacking across the board at Manchester United but now is the perfect time for that to change.

Arteta just isn’t very good and is full of waffle

Mikel Arteta isn't very good

I immediately thought Mikel Arteta was full of bs, waffle and modern coaching tricks when he was handed the manager’s job at Arsenal.

The reality of the Arsenal fanbase too is, perhaps more than any other club, that they’ve a divine right to win the lot every season. To illustrate the point, I retweeted and commented on an Arsenal Fan TV tweet when one of the guys said “I think we could go invincible this season.”

It’s only a few games in and there’s nothing that’s changed in years. Pitches are beautiful. Sun is shining. Arsenal are incredible. Three nil, four nil, five nil, brilliant but all the ‘this is the year’ talk is more than a little grating.

Don’t forget that in each of those years they’ve significantly invested. This is Mikel Arteta’s team now, and these are Mikel Arteta’s players. He has broken the bank for the likes of Declan Dice who, dare I say, has been below par so far this season.

Players that came in that were supposed to be winners from a winning club Manchester City – Zinchenko and Jesus – are nothing more than bit part players.

How many players has Arteta actually brought in that were seen to be title-winning level players, and how many of them has he made significantly better? Ben White? Kai Havertz? Thomas Partey? Declan Rice?

What about Martin Odegaard? He was the guy at age 15 at Real Madrid that was meant to go on and be a world beater anyway, so surely he would have got to this point of maturity whereby he has an impact on somebody’s first team.

The classic question is how many players in the Arsenal squad has Mikel Arteta turned from average to good, good to very good, very good to great? And if you compare that with Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola, Unai Emery and others, he doesn’t come across very well at all.

Forget results, because results come as a consequence of you making those players better.

It’s not about whether he’s a nice guy, it’s not whether he’s fresh and young or he’s from the Pep Guardiola Barcelona school of coaching… How many players has Arteta actually made significantly better and, Arsenal fans, I want you to answer that honestly.

Curtis Jones capped a stunning England debut with a wonderfully taken goal against Greece on Thursday.

Jones’ senior debut for the Three Lions has been a long time coming after making nearly 150 appearances for Liverpool over the past five years, winning a host of major honours with the Reds.

The midfielder finally got his chance in England’s must-win Uefa Nations League trip to Athens.

To say he delivered would be a massive understatement.

Jones controlled the game in midfield, completing 98% of his passes (65/68) and playing three passes into the final third. Defensively, Jones kept the Greeks at bay with seven recoveries and four tackles, while winning seven of his 10 contested ground duels.

But Jones’ crowning moment came in the 83rd minute when he flicked home a stunning backheel to crown his debut with a goal and finish the job for England.

“I tried. Happy to come out with a goal too! I can go high or low and get on the ball and play,” Jones told ITV after the match.

Unsurprisingly, Jones’ performance — which earned him a 9/10 in our player ratings — has earned rave reviews from fans and pundits alike.

Prominent among those singing his praises was former England and Everton midfielder Leon Osman, who lauded Jones’ ‘wonderful evening’.

“Curtis Jones has looked very assured in the middle of the pitch,” Osman told BBC Radio 5 Live, adding:

“[He] has looked composed particularly when receiving the ball in his own area, he is unflustered, defended excellently and scored a back heel to top it all off. Wonderful evening for him.”

Jones will now have his eye on another start and big performance when England take on the Republic of Ireland on Sunday at Wembley.

England took a huge step toward Uefa Nations League promotion with a resounding 3-0 win away in Greece on Thursday.

Avenging their shock defeat at Wembley, the Three Lions put their hosts to the sword with goals from Ollie Watkins and debutant Curtis Jones, either side of an Odisseas Vlachodimos own goal forced by a Jude Bellingham shot that hit the post.

The result takes England top of the group, level on points with Greece but now boasting a better goal difference and head-to-head record.

Any sort of win against the Republic of Ireland at Wembley on Sunday will return England to League A at the first time of asking.

For now, read on for full England player ratings from a huge win in Athens.

England player ratings vs Greece: Curtis Jones ‘outstanding’ on debut

Jordan Pickford – 9/10 – Made some vital saves to preserve the win and clean sheet, while reminding everyone how important he is for England.

Kyle Walker – 6/10 – A little negative with his play, going backwards when he’d taken up some great positions. Slotted in well enough at centre-back in the second half.

Ezri Konsa – 7/10 – A solid performance, completing 100% of his passes and winning both of his contested ground duels. Brought off at half-time, presumably with an injury.

Marc Guehi – 8/10 – Tidy with the ball and made a couple of important interceptions and tackles to keep the Greeks at bay.

Rico Lewis – 8/10 – Used the ball brilliantly and popped up in some dangerous positions. Perhaps should have got himself on the scoresheet in the second half but was denied by a good save.

Conor Gallagher – 8/10 – Got through plenty of defensive work and did his best to drive England forward once he turned the ball over.

Curtis Jones – 9/10 – Absolute class on the ball and alert to any Greek counter-attacks. Misplaced just three of 68 attempted passes. Capped off an outstanding England debut with a beautifully taken goal. ‘Outstanding’ according to former England and Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie.

Noni Madueke – 8/10 – Set up Watkins’ goal with a great run and cut-back and was a menace all game, creating a match-high three chances and having five touches in the opposition box.

Jude Bellingham – 9/10 – The Greeks couldn’t handle Bellingham once he got into full flow, powering through midfield with immense force. Hit the post twice, first with a header, then with a shot from the edge of the box which hit Vlachodimos and went in. Unlucky not to be credited with a goal but did the damage.

Anthony Gordon – 6/10 – A few dangerous flashes but was more subdued than Madueke.

Ollie Watkins – 8/10 – Took his goal well and provided England with a good focal point, even if he was a little isolated at times.

Substitutes:

Lewis Hall (46′, for Konsa) – 7/10 – A solid England debut from a youngster with the potential to be his nation’s left-back for years to come.

Harry Kane (67′, for Watkins) – 7/10 – Did a lot of work off the ball, including his run to create the space for Bellingham’s shot on the second goal.

Morgan Rogers (67′, for Gordon) – 7/10 – Won’t be credited with an assist on the second goal but it was his smart pass inside to Bellingham that set England away.

Jarrod Bown (67′, for Madueke) – 7/10 – Did well in the build-up for the third goal.

Morgan Gibbs-White (79′, for Gallagher) – 7/10 – Set up Jones as England finished the job.

A new video has emerged involving suspended Premier League referee David Coote which appears to show the English official sniffing a suspicious white powder through a rolled-up note while working at Euro 2024 this summer.

The footage was believed to have been taken on July 6, a day after the Euro 2024 quarter-final clash between Spain and Germany, where Coote acted as a support VAR official.

The 42-year-old is believed to have sent the clip to one of his friends and filmed himself sniffing the suspicious white powder in a UEFA-funded hotel room he used during the tournament in Germany.

On the bedside table alongside the powder are scattered packets of prescription drugs, a credit card, and the Terry Hayes novel The Year of The Locust. This paints a very bad picture for the English official after already landing himself in hot water this week.

According to Sky Sports, the PGMOL have confirmed that they are aware of the new video of Coote and the refereeing body are likely to launch an investigation into its legitimacy.

The PGMOL have also acknowledged the referee’s welfare during a tough week for the Premier League official and will continue to provide him with support throughout the process.

The Premier League career of David Coote is now in serious doubt

This new footage puts the continuation of David Coote’s career in serious doubt after the events of this week.

Footage surfaced on social media on Monday afternoon showing the 42-year-old making disparaging remarks about Liverpool and their former manager Jürgen Klopp, just days after the referee was the man in the middle for the Reds’ 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Anfield.

The video showed Coote stating that Liverpool played “s**t” in a game that he was at and that Klopp is a “c**t” after a recent incident with the German coach.

This video is currently being investigated by the PGMOL and resulted in Coote being suspended by the organisation.

The new clip will certainly decrease the chances of a positive outcome for the English official, who is likely to know his faith before the Premier League gets back underway after the international break.

Arsenal have been handed a fresh injury blow as Ben White has undergone a minor knee procedure during the international break.

According to The Standard, the 27-year-old has been playing through the pain in recent weeks, which could be linked back to the knee issue he suffered earlier in the campaign which forced the defender to miss games against PSG, Leicester Southampton and Bolton.

With the football calendar entering an international window, it has been decided that this period was the best time for White to resolve his issue, but it remains to be seen how long it will keep the Englishman out of action.

Should it prove to be a significant amount of time, this would be a major blow for Mikel Arteta as White is a key player for the Spaniard’s side having started 12 games for the Gunners so far.

The 27-year-old is predominately used as a right-back but when needed, the former Brighton star can play as a central defender, which is useful given Arsenal’s recent injury woes.

Ben White injury is another major blow for Arsenal and Mikel Arteta

White’s injury and potential absence is another major setback for Arsenal in a season where the Gunners have suffered a lot from injuries to key stars.

Arteta is already without Riccardo Calafiori and Takehiro Tomiyasu in his backline, while the Spanish coach also witnessed Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka pick up fitness issues during Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Chelsea, with the duo subsequently pulling out of the England squad.

The North London club have had to deal with these problems throughout the opening phase of the 2024/25 campaign and It certainly has affected their start to the current term.

Arsenal are nine points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool and need to get back to winning ways when they face Nottingham Forest after the current international break.

Gary Lineker is set to leave the BBC’s iconic show Match of the Day at the end of the season after 26 years of hosting the football highlights programme.

The former Everton striker has been the host of MOTD since 1999 and has become one of the United Kingdom’s most beloved figures having been the face of the BBC’s football coverage for over two decades.

According to the Daily Mail, Lineker’s time as host of MOTD will come to an end upon the conclusion of the 2024/25 campaign.

The 63-year-old will also put an end to his time with the BBC entirely after presenting the 2026 World Cup in America, Mexico, and Canada, as well as the 2025/26 edition of the FA Cup. This will be a major change for the broadcaster as there is a generation of football fans that do not know their coverage without the former Tottenham star.

Lineker is the BBC’s highest-paid presenter with a reported salary of around £1.35million and his exit will free up these funds to spend on production.

This news follows the departure of another key MOTD figure at the end of last season as Ian Wright ended his time as a pundit on the football highlights programme. Both men’s exits could have a major impact on the show and it will be interesting to see if it will affect viewing figures.

Who will replace Gary Lineker as the host of Match of the Day?

Whoever follows Lineker has the host of Match of the Day as big shoes to fill as that person could define the show over the next decade.

According to the Daily Mail, Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan are viewed as the favourites to replace the former England striker, with the former receiving a glowing endorsement from Henry Winter.

Mark Chapman is the best successor to Gary Lineker as MOTD host imho. Good journalist and presenter + rapport with pundits,” the journalist said.

The 51-year-old already hosts Match of the Day 2 following the Premier League’s Sunday matches and it seems like a natural step for the presenter to be promoted to the main show on a Saturday night. Although Logan presents tough competition having been given the role of hosting the BBC’s new Champions League highlights programme.

Lee Carsley has picked his final England squad as interim manager ahead of the Three Lions’ upcoming Nations League games against the Republic of Ireland and Greece, which includes in-form Liverpool star Curtis Jones.

Carsley’s side will secure automatic promotion back to League A with maximum points from their final two games. A second-placed finish will mean a two-legged play-off tie against a third-ranked team from League A, with a place in the top tier at stake.

England have been fun to watch during the 50-year-old’s short reign but a new era is set to begin in 2025, with former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel set to oversee the Three Lions’ 2026 World Cup campaign.

However, England still have business to attend to in the Nations League and Carsley has picked his final squad, which includes Liverpool’s Curtis Jones, reports The Athletic.

The England boss included the Reds midfielder in his October plans, however, the 23-year-old could not participate as his partner gave birth to their first child.

Jones has been in top form for Liverpool lately, producing one goal and three assists in the Merseyside club’s last five matches – the latest being a beauty for Luis Diaz’s opening goal against Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday night.

This took the midfielder’s tally to one goal and four assists across 12 games this season, and the Reds talent will now look to replicate this on the international stage.

Curtis Jones is in but Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers misses out again

One of the shock absentees was Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers, who has been a key part of Unai Emery’s success this season. The 22-year-old has featured 14 times in all competitions for the Birmingham outfit, producing three goals and three assists.

The Englishman is having a breakthrough year at Villa Park and has been very impressive throughout the opening part of the 2024/25 campaign.

Many expected Rogers to be called up to the England squad during the October break, therefore, missing out this time is a big shock. The Villa star will not be happy about this situation, however, he is still very young and at this stage, it is more important that he impresses Tuchel, rather than Carsley.

Crystal Palace are continuing to struggle in the Premier League this season, with Richard Keys suggesting Gareth Southgate could now be the solution to replace Oliver Glasner.

Southgate is available after stepping down as England manager after Euro 2024, which has inevitably led to plenty of speculation about his next job in recent weeks and months.

Palace looks like somewhere where we could soon see a vacancy after such an awful start to the 2024/25 campaign from Glasner.

The Austrian tactician made a great start to life at Selhurst Park last season but is now struggling badly, with the Eagles just two points above the relegation zone in 17th place in the Premier League table right now.

Palace have won just one league game in their opening ten, so if things don’t change quickly, there seems some logic in moving for someone like Southgate, who did an impressive job with England.

Gareth Southgate – a safe option for Crystal Palace?

Palace stumble on. One minute you think they’ve sorted things out, then they slip up again. Gareth Safegate?” Richard Keys said of the Palace situation on his blog.

Southgate might not be the most inspiring candidate, with plenty of England fans critical of his team’s style of football at times, even if he did guide the Three Lions to two Euros finals.

“He’s perfect for Arsenal. He would be at the top of my list!” – is this dream about to become a reality for the Gunners? Click here to find out more!

However, Palace just need to ensure they survive in the top flight, so that kind of role could be ideal for Southgate to adopt a safety-first approach that suits his style and personality more.

Having said that, Southgate is also surely good enough to be a bit picky and might well feel tempted to stick it out a bit longer to see if something more tempting comes along.

Palace are a big club with a lot of good players, but they’re in a difficult situation at the moment and Southgate might not fancy a relegation battle when he could perhaps be in contention for a bigger job if one becomes available.

Aston Villa are confident that Morgan Rogers will sign a new deal with the Premier League club as the 22-year-old has earned himself a bumper contract with his performances this season.

The midfielder is having a breakthrough year at Villa Park as the English talent has the full trust of Unai Emery. Rogers has started all 13 games for Aston Villa in the Champions League and Premier League this term, scoring three goals and assisting a further three.

The 22-year-old has put himself in a great position for an England call-up this month and the feeling around Villa is that the young talent has the potential to be a superstar.

Rogers moved to Birmingham at the start of the year as Aston Villa agreed a £16m fee with Middlesbrough for the midfield talent. The former Boro star penned a deal at Villa Park until 2029 but having impressed massively this season, the Premier League outfit are keen to offer the player a bumper new deal.

Aston Villa are believed to be confident that Rogers will put pen to paper once new terms are sent, reports Football Insider, which could be crucial should the Premier League’s “Big Six” come calling next summer.

Morgan Rogers is key to the future of Aston Villa

Aston Villa continue to go from strength to strength under Emery and are making a great attempt at closing the gap to the top clubs in the Premier League. The “Big Six” will try to stop their progress by luring away their big stars and Villa cannot let that happen when it comes to Rogers.

The 22-year-old could be one of the best players in the Premier League in a few seasons’ time and fans of the Birmingham club will want to see the Englishman shine at Villa Park rather than at Old Trafford, Etihad or Emirates Stadium.

It would be a big deal if Rogers signs a new deal at Villa and it seems that the Birmingham outfit are confident of getting it done.
