Crystal Palace are keen on signing the Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg.

According to a report from the Sun, they are plotting a £20 million plus move for the 17-year-old midfielder who has impressed in the Championship with the Black Cats. Rigg is regarded as one of the finest young talents in English football right now, and he could develop into a future star for Crystal Palace.

The player has been linked with Manchester United as well.

It will be interesting to see if Sunderland are willing to sanction his departure in the coming months. They will feel that the midfielder is likely to improve further, and he could command a bigger transfer fee in the near future. They might hold onto him for the foreseeable future.

The opportunity to play in the Premier League can be quite attractive for the young midfielder. He could be tempted to join a big club like Crystal Palace, and they could provide him with the platform to showcase his abilities in the English top flight. Ample exposure to Premier League football could accelerate his development and help the 17-year-old improve further.

It will be interesting to see if Crystal Palace step up their efforts to get the deal done. They are looking to make a move in January, having watched the midfielder several times this season.

Rigg has picked up three goals for his club this season and his numbers are likely to improve when he is playing in a better team alongside better players.

Meanwhile, the Black Cats offered the player a three-year contract last summer and they are under no pressure to sanction his departure in January. It is fair to assume that the Championship outfit will make it difficult for Crystal Palace to lure the England under-18 international away from the Stadium of Light this season.

Sunderland’s 17-year-old talent Chris Rigg is a name that is starting to become well-known amongst the big clubs in Europe as several continue to monitor the youngster’s progress in the Championship.

The midfielder has established himself as a key player in Regis Le Bris’ side and has played a big role in Sunderland’s impressive start to the season as the Black Cats currently sit top of the Championship after 14 games.

Rigg has featured in 13 of those matches, producing three goals from midfield, which follows his breakthrough season last time around, in which he netted his first two Championship goals.

Rigg has a contract at the Stadium of Light until 2027 and heading into the 2025 transfer windows, sources have told CaughtOffside that Sunderland are keen to keep their 17-year-old talent as they push for promotion to the Premier League.

However, the interest of several of Europe’s biggest clubs put the Black Cats in a difficult position to keep the midfielder as his departure could significantly impact Sunderland, both on and off the pitch.

The Championship club will seek at least €30m for Rigg in 2025 and there are several clubs who might be willing to match their asking price.

Man United and Real Madrid set sights on Sunderland’s Chris Rigg

Man United have been the club that has been linked to Rigg the most in recent weeks with reports stating that the Premier League giants’ scouts have watched the 17-year-old nearly “every week this season”.

The Manchester club will face major competition in their pursuit of the midfield talent as sources have stated that several Premier League clubs are monitoring his progress, which include: Arsenal, Crystal Palace, Chelsea, Brighton, Man City, Newcastle, Liverpool and Wolves.

There is also interest in the Englishman from abroad, which is the route Jude Bellingham took on his path to superstardom.

Real Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund are all believed to have an interest in Rigg and a move to Germany could be exactly what the youngster needs in order to develop his game at the highest level.

Man United continue to monitor the progress of 17-year-old talent Chris Rigg at Sunderland with a former Red Devils scout unveiling that the Premier League giants have watched the midfielder nearly “every week this season”.

A new era is set to begin at Man United after the international break as Ruben Amorim is set to take over the Red Devils squad following the sacking of Erik ten Hag.

This comes after a summer of change at Old Trafford where the hierarchy at the Premier League club was completely reshuffled with INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe becoming involved in the sporting side of the Manchester giants.

The new part-owners want to do things differently going forward and everything is now in place to help United achieve this.

One of the most important things left to be addressed is the playing squad as the current group of players are simply not good enough to compete at the highest level. Man United are on the lookout for some of the sport’s best young talent and one star they already have an eye on is Sunderland’s Chris Rigg.

The Manchester club have been linked with a move for the 17-year-old since the summer and according to former Man United scout, Mick Brown, the Englishman is a player the Red Devils have watched nearly “every week this season”.

Rigg has established himself as a key player in Regis Le Bris’ Sunderland side and has played a big role in their impressive start to the season as the Black Cats currently sit top of the Championship after 14 games.

Man United have a close eye on Sunderland star Chris Rigg

Speaking to Football Insider, Brown has provided some insight into Man United’s interest in Rigg with the former scout claiming that the Manchester club have watched the midfielder “nearly every week this season”, which shows the Premier League outfit’s level of interest.

“He’s definitely one they’re interested in,” Brown told Football Insider. “He fits the profile of a young player who they can help develop.

“They’ve had scouts watching him closely at Sunderland nearly every week this season.

“They will know how good he is and how far they think he can go in the game, and from what I’ve heard they’ve been very impressed.”

Man United will find it difficult to lure Chris Rigg away from Sunderland during the January transfer window as the Championship leaders are determined to keep the 17-year-old for the remainder of the season.

Sunderland have made a very impressive start to the 2024/25 campaign under Regis Le Bris as they currently sit top of the Championship after 12 matches having won nine games so far.

Rigg has played a key role in the Black Cats’ success with the midfielder now a staple in Le Bris’ starting 11. The Englishman has made 13 appearances in all competitions for Sunderland throughout the opening phase of the season, netting three goals along the way.

The youngster signed a three-year professional contract at the Stadium of Light in July, however, that is not stopping several Premier League clubs from monitoring the midfielder’s progress.

Man United and Chelsea are among Rigg’s suitors but according to Football Insider, Sunderland will do everything they can in January to prevent the 17-year-old from leaving midseason as the Black Cats dream of a return to the Premier League.

Sunderland’s Chris Rigg is the type of player Man United should be signing

Man United recruitment has been heavily criticised over recent transfer windows as the Manchester club have spent huge money on players that are not capable of playing at Premier League level with Antony being the best example of their failings.

Rigg is the type of player the Red Devils should be recruiting as he could be brought to Old Trafford for a fee that wouldn’t break the bank and would have sell-on value in the future.

The player’s age would also allow him time to develop at the Premier League giants with the hope of being a starter for Man United for many years. However, if the Manchester club are seriously interested in the youngster, they may have to wait until next summer to get him.

Although he’s just 17 years of age Sunderland’s Chris Rigg has been lighting up the Championship, and both Chelsea and Man United are “eager” to sign him.

Sources have told CaughtOffside that both Premier League giants have been closely monitoring the attacking midfielder’s development, with scouts present at the Black Cats recent matches against Leeds United, Hull City and Luton Town.

Man United and Chelsea want Chris Rigg

They face a challenge to be able to land him, however, as sources have also advanced that Brighton, Arsenal and Wolverhampton Wanderers are also keeping an eye on the talented teen.

Rigg has been consistently turning heads with his impressive performances for Sunderland, and has been lauded for his technical skills, game vision and ability to keep control of the ball even when put under the severest pressure by opponents.

That potential was always going to put him on the radar of the top clubs, and it now appears to be a foregone conclusion that he’ll make the jump to the English top-flight.

CaughtOffside sources have indicated that the current Championship leaders – who will clearly be loathe to lose one of their up and coming stars – have slapped a price tag of £25m-£30m on the player’s head.

Such a steep asking price is clearly designed to keep away potential suitors, however, Rigg would appear to have no ceiling in terms of his talent at present, and as such, the price could well be considered to be a bargain in future.

For now, the Hebburn born youngster, who has three goals in 11 Championship games in 2024/25 (transfermarkt), is concentrating on keeping the Black Cats at the top of the English second tier.

Illan Meslier’s mistake against Sunderland cost Leeds United a vital three points but Chris Sutton believes what Junior Firpo did after the full-time whistle was worst.

The French goalkeeper failed to stop a simple ball back to him, allowing Sunderland to draw 2-2 and take a point from a game Leeds should’ve won.

And reacting furiously with his number one, full-back Firpo, who thought he’d scored Leeds’ winner 40 minutes earlier, stormed off down the tunnel at the full-time whistle.

And responding to the Dominican Republic international’s actions, pundit Chris Sutton believes the defender’s actions were synonymous with a poor teammate.

“Junior Firpo was really unhappy and stormed down the tunnel,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“That’s not a good teammate.

“I didn’t realise Firpo is [Paolo] Maldini at left-back. I’ve seen him make plenty of mistakes. You’ve got to stick together. I would’ve gone and given the goalkeeper a hug.”

Jordan Henderson has started less than half of Ajax’s league games this season.

The 34-year-old joined the Dutch giants 10 months ago following a brief spell with Al-Ettifaq.

However, despite returning to European football; the continent he conquered during his 12 years with Liverpool, Henderson’s stint with Ajax has failed to live up to expectations.

The ex-England international is playing a bit-part role for Francesco Farioli and could be set to leave the club in the New Year.

Jordan Henderson: Sunderland keen to re-sign Ajax midfielder

According to a recent report from The Sun, the former Liverpool captain has suitors back in England, including Championship side Sunderland.

The Black Cats are on a mission to win promotion back to the Premier League, and Henderson, who spent 13 years at the Stadium of Light, is an option to come in and help their title push.

As things stand, Sunderland sit top of the Championship table with 19 points after nine games.

Henderson’s experience, both domestically and internationally, would prove invaluable to Regis Le Bris, who hopes to be the man to guide the club back to the big time for the first time since 2017.

Illan Meslier had a night to forget away to Sunderland on Friday night.

Despite falling behind to a nine-minute goal from Chris Rigg, Leeds United fought back well to turn the game around.

Joel Piroe equalised on the 22-minute mark with Junior Firpo firing the Whites into the lead with just over half an hour left to play.

And it looked like the away team were going to hold on and take what would’ve been a huge three points in the race for Championship promotion… Meslier had other ideas though.

Illan Meslier mistake saw Leeds United teammate ‘storm’ off pitch

The 24-year-old shot-stopper failed to stop a simple ball back to him with just seconds left on the clock.

The keeper’s error, which will go down in Championship history as one of the worst-ever individual mistakes, saw the Black Cats equalise at the death and left Firpo fuming.

According to journalist Graham Smyth, who was in attendance at the Stadium of Light, Leeds United’s second goalscorer stormed off the pitch at the full-time whistle while his teammates rushed to console their keeper.

Suggestions the Whites’ camp has been disrupted by Meslier’s howler will not go down well with fans, nor manager Daniel Farke, who must now work hard to bring the side back together as they prepare to host Sheffield United after the international break.

Manchester United are reportedly considering a potential transfer move for Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson as they look for someone to come in and challenge Andre Onana.

Onana has not been particularly convincing since joining Man Utd from Inter Milan just over a year ago, and it perhaps makes sense that the club now recognise that he needs more competition.

According to the Sun, Patterson is being eyed up by the Red Devils for that role, with the 24-year-old described as being firmly in their sights, though Liverpool are also mentioned as being among the suitors for the £20million-rated shot-stopper.

Patterson looks like a decent talent, but some United fans might not be entirely convinced he’s quite of the calibre required to be challenging to be number one for a major European club.

Patterson transfer: What would this mean for Onana at Man United?

Onana played under Erik ten Hag at Ajax and looked a fine talent, while he also continued to shine when he made the move to Inter later on.

However, it’s just not happened for the Cameroon international at Old Trafford, so this Patterson story, whether it actually materialises or not, perhaps suggests there are now serious doubts about continuing with their current first-choice ‘keeper.

It might be that Onana can still turn things around, but he might benefit from more competition to keep him on his toes, while Ten Hag would also perhaps understandably like the option of rotating his goalkeepers more.

Liverpool might also be a tempting option for Patterson, however, so it will be interesting to see how that saga pans out as well, with Alisson very much the clear first choice at Anfield at the moment, while Caoimhin Kelleher is a very capable backup, though he’s perhaps someone who’ll want to move on soon to play more regularly, which could leave a space for Patterson.

Man United are reportedly ready to step up their interest in Sunderland talent Chris Rigg and could make a move for the 17-year-old as early as January.

The midfielder has impressed with the Black Cats so far this season as the youngster has played a key role in Régis Le Bris’ team sitting second in the Championship standings. The Englishman has featured in all seven of Sunderland’s matches and scored his first goal of the campaign in their 1-0 win over Middlesbrough at the weekend.

This term is proving to be a breakout season for Rigg having made his debut for Sunderland last season and the youngster’s performances have attracted the interest of several Premier League clubs, which includes Man United.

According to talkSPORT, the Manchester outfit are ready to step up their interest in Rigg and could move for the 17-year-old as early as January to avoid competition as Newcastle have also shown an interest in the Englishman.

The Sunderland talent is widely considered as the best youngster to emerge in the Championship since Jude Bellingham and he perfectly fits the profile of young player that Man United are looking to sign going forward.

Man United wise to move for Sunderland star Chris Rigg early

A move for Rigg in January would be a smart decision from Man United as it would help the Manchester club get the jump on the competition as there will be a lot of interest in the youngster next summer should he continue to shine at Sunderland.

The Premier League giants may have to pay extra to acquire the 17-year-old mid-season but that could be worthwhile in the long run.

Signing youngsters such as Rigg is vastly different from the previous approach Man United took towards transfers, signing big stars for massive money, who ultimately underdelivered and had no sell-on value.

Rigg would be given time to develop at United and understand the club over the coming years and should things not work out at Old Trafford, the Manchester club will at the very least get their money back for the midfielder down the line.
